Fatima Asghar's Story

Fatima Asghar, a 3-year-old girl from Gujrat, Punjab, has been suffering from shortness of breath and chest discomfort since birth. She often gets exhausted, even after mild to moderate physical activity. Due to a condition, her skin turns bluish at times. Worried about Fatima’s health, her parents took her to the doctor for a detailed checkup. After some tests, the doctor diagnosed Fatima with Dextrocardia, Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), and a large Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). These are serious congenital heart problems that affect normal blood flow and heart function. When Fatima was one year old, she underwent a Pulmonary Artery Banding (PAB) that helped manage her condition. However, to save her life, the doctors have recommended Angiography and a CP Shunt as an essential next step in her treatment. Unfortunately, the cost associated with the surgery is beyond the financial means of her family. However, without a timely surgery, Fatima’s condition will further deteriorate and may lead to serious health complications such as heart failure, chronic fatigue, and restricted physical growth.

Fatima lives in a modest house with her parents. The family consists of six family members. Her father is a painter and the family’s only breadwinner. He earns around PKR 35,000 per month. This income is barely enough to cover their utility bills totalling PKR 5,000, food, educational fees amounting to PKR 5,000, and other household expenses. Unfortunately, the family is also burdened with a loan of PKR 350,000. Thus, Fatima’s father is not able to save the required money for Fatima’s life-saving surgery.

Fatima’s father shared his feelings:

“Fatima is so young, and she has already gone through a lot. It breaks my heart to see her struggling with her health. Her condition is declining every day. As a father, it is extremely difficult to see her suffer. Unfortunately, I do not have the resources for the surgery she needs. Please help her undergo the surgery.”
