Sakeena Essa Solangi's Story

Meet Sakeena Essa Solangi, an 86-year-old widow from Tando Muhammad Khan, Sindh, who has been experiencing pain due to a lump in her umbilical region for the past five months. Over time, her lump has increased in size and has caused immense discomfort and pain. At an old age, Sakeena just wants to live a peaceful life. However, her condition makes it difficult for her to even carry out her routine tasks. Worried about her well-being, she went to a local hospital and consulted a doctor. After performing a thorough examination, the doctor diagnosed Sakeena with a paraumbilical hernia. It is a condition in which an abdominal tissue protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal wall near the navel. To ease her pain, the doctor recommended mesh hernioplasty. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is beyond her family’s means. Not undergoing the surgery may lead to various complications, such as a strangulated hernia, where the blood supply to the intestine is cut off. It may cause severe pain, infection, and life-threatening damage to her intestines, requiring emergency surgery.

Sakeena’s husband passed away a long time ago. Now she lives in a mud house with her two sons. One of her sons works as a security guard in a private organization and earns a monthly salary of PKR 25,000. Her other son is a cook and earns PKR 12,000 per month. Together, they earn around PKR 37,000 monthly. Sakeena also has two other sons and two daughters, all of whom are married and live separately. The family’s monthly income is insufficient to cover their utility bills and food expenses. After covering these necessities, they are left with nothing to save for Sakeena’s hernioplasty.

Sakeena shared her heartfelt plea as follows: “At this stage of my life, I only wish to live my remaining days without pain and discomfort. The swelling in my abdomen makes even small tasks challenging, and I fear my condition may worsen. I need your help. Kindly contribute to my treatment.”
