You Can Save Reshma’s Little Heart Through Surgery

Reshma Bibi's Story

Reshma Bibi, a 5-year-old girl from Lower Dir, KPK, is suffering from breathlessness and chest infections. Activities like running and playing are challenging for her. Her parents are deeply worried because she is unable to gain weight like other children of her age. Concerned about her worsening condition, her family took her to a doctor for a proper medical evaluation. After detailed examination, the doctor diagnosed Reshma with a Large Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP). This means there is an abnormal opening in the wall between the upper chambers of her heart, and one of her heart valves is also not working properly. To save her life, the doctor has advised ASD closure with mitral valve repair through open-heart surgery. If left untreated, Reshma’s condition may become life-threatening. It may lead to severe breathing difficulties and potential heart failure. Timely intervention is necessary to save her life.

Reshma lives with her parents and two siblings in a modest home. Her father is the only earning member and works as a laborer in Saudi Arabia, earning only PKR 30,000 per month. This small income is barely enough to meet the family’s daily needs. Due to their financial difficulties, they cannot pay for the open-heart surgery.

With tears in her eyes, Reshma’s mother shared her plea as follows:

“My daughter is suffering from a serious heart condition, and she gets tired so quickly. It breaks my heart to see her unable to play like other children. We are helpless and cannot afford this surgery. Kindly save Reshma’s life.”
